Queensland Country Bank Stadium welcomed moto enthusiasts from across North Queensland for the AUSX Supercross Championships, bringing the massive supercross racing event to North Queensland for the first time ever.
The stadium transformed to a red dirt supercross track late last week, ahead of the highly anticipated event.
Queensland Country Bank Stadium General Manager Cameron Jones said the AUSX Supercross Championships was unlike anything the venue had seen before.
“We were excited to welcome the AUSX Supercross Championships for the first time, and for their season opener, with some of the world’s best supercross riders putting on an incredible show of elite racing for fans,” Mr Jones said.
“The track setup was a sight to behold with 6000 tonnes of dirt trucked into the stadium from Wednesday to deliver the purpose-built dirt track for the event,” Mr Jones said.
“The track conversion began at midnight Wednesday, with a special geofabric cloth covering the grass, followed by boards to protect the turf before the dirt was added.
“Bump out will begin within hours of the event finishing, with all the dirt trucked out and the field revealed by Sunday afternoon, when we’ll start preparations for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup.”
Queensland Country Bank Stadium Events Manager Desleigh Drew said the AUSX Supercross offered something for every one of the 16,095 fans.
“Fans were treated to a real spectacle with music, pyrotechnics, world class supercross racing and an incredible opening act, featuring the world’s biggest freestyle motocross touring show Freestyle Kings LIVE,” Ms Drew said.
“The AUSX fun kicked off early with Australian supercross legend Chad Reed taking part in the first ever ‘Holeshot Challenge’ on Palmer St on Friday afternoon, offering fans a sneak preview of what to expect on event day.
“On event day, the crowd were wowed from start to finish, with the pre-event Fan Fest providing an opportunity for fans to meet and greet with riders and enjoy entertainment, giveaway and activities.”
The final results of the season opener saw Christian Craig sweeping both SX1 Finals, while Brodie Connolly topped a far less predictable SX2 contest.
